Our resourses page is here to help you find information for your efforts to live a self sufficient life for your self
We have recommended some books which have helped us in our efforts to live our lifestyle, some have helped more than others.
Please read individual notes to help you select the right ones for you.

Although this book was to some extent an inspiration to both Fiona and Steve, it is lacking in reality.
If you are looking for a manual on how to live self-sufficiently then look else ware as this book leaves too much to the imagination and falls a long way short of being complete.
To my mind it should be renamed "The Incomplete book of self sufficiency" however having said that it is worth reading and is good value for money.

How to Grow Tomato's& 115 Ways to Prepare

At the point of posting this review I am still reading this book and I am impressed wit the depth of knowledge imparted and the manner in which it is imparted. Seldom do writers remember that there ordinance may not have a full grasp of their subject's babble or terminology. This cannot be said of Ron Parker this book although only in digital format on my computer is destined to be my number one source for sheep knowledge, and it was free?

The entire The Sheep Book by Ron Parker, Ohio University Press (Swallow Press), 2002, ISBN 0-8040-1032-3 is available here as a group of PDF files for use by individuals

Growing Kiwi fruit Blackberries & Raspberries

Humanure Handbook
A Guide to composting Human manure.

This is an interesting read and entertaining in to the bargain, it is available free from the link opposite and should be read by anyone tying to help reduce his or her impact on this planet.
This book to my mind is set in reality it is well illustrated and covers most subjects as completely as is possible. Paul Heiney is to be complimented on his approach to life and how to live a life less ordinary with respect for the environment your animals and your self. I whole heartedly recommend this book with no reservations.

Here is a book well worth its cover price an inspirational read to say the least. What a joy to find a couple who share the same desires to nurture the land in this way and then prepare food as it should be, basic and wholesome. If you can resist all of the wonderful recipes long enough to let the food grow in your garden then you will have achieved a wonderful level of self-control.

The river cottage cook book is so much more that a cook book, its entertaining and inspirational. A sensible guide to nurturing your food whether it's a plant or an animal, Hugh's personal openness is an inspiration in its self. Life does not always go as we plan and to let others know how much you get it wrong in your efforts to succeed is a wonderful and empowering thing.

The river cottage meat book is far less empowering than is Hugh's first book, it has much to say which is worth listening to but I am not sure we should pay for such information. This book refers to the first in the series (The river cottage cookbook) far too often for my liking. If you don't own "The river cottage cookbook" then so much of this book will be of little use to you. Hugh uses this book to highlight the sorry state of our meat industry in the UK and although worth knowing I would rather not have to pay £20 for the information.

The river cottage yearbook is the second in Hugh's series of books and well worth a read. Although there is some repartition it is worth knowing how you can use your own produce on a yearly cycle as different produce comes in to season naturally.

Home cheese making something worth doing especially if you have milk from your own stock, this book however is intended to generate customers for its author. It contains many useful recipes and is worth buying for that but its not the only way to make cheese and you can make many of the cheeses for far less if you do a little research. See our cheese-making page for some money saving ideas. (Our page is still under construction so check back in a few days for the update)
